Best Practices for Senior Faculty Hiring in Universities

CBT UC was invited by the provost of a Carnegie Doctoral/Research university to prepare a report on best practices in peer institutions for hiring senior faculty members. The study, conducted by a CBT consultant who is a former provost of research universities in the South and Southwest, included survey work and direct contacts with former academic officers at 15 aspirant peer institutions. The report contained summaries of relevant policies and procedures including specific procedures to ensure competitive searches and the attraction of potential candidates whose current positions would not threatened by participation in recruitment efforts. The client provost anticipated that the report’s conclusions would assist him in making the case with the institution’s faculty shared governance groups regarding the wisdom of making a key set of changes in the extant hiring policies and practices.
